What is a rigid box?
A rigid box—sometimes called a setup box or turned-edge box—is constructed from heavyweight board that is wrapped with printed or specialty material.
Unlike a folding carton, the finished box maintains its shape rather than arriving flat and being folded into position.
That construction gives rigid packaging its substantial feel and makes it especially well suited for premium product presentations, gifting, PR kits and experiences where the packaging itself is part of the presentation.
But "rigid box" doesn't describe just one structure.
The same construction method can be used to create hinged boxes, magnetic closures, two-piece boxes, drawers, telescoping structures and completely custom formats.
Types of custom rigid boxes
-
Magnetic Closure Boxes
Hinged rigid boxes with integrated magnets that create a clean closure and controlled opening experience.
-
Hinged / Cigar-Style Boxes
A classic rigid construction with an attached lid, particularly useful for multi-product presentations, gifting and PR kits.
Example: MIKA Restaurant
-
Two-Piece Rigid Boxes
Separate lid-and-base structures that can range from minimal premium packaging to elaborate dimensional presentations.
Example: Your Friends & Neighbors
-
Drawer Boxes
A rigid outer sleeve paired with an internal sliding tray for a controlled product reveal.
-
Telescoping Boxes
Lid-and-base constructions where the lid extends partially or fully over the base.
-
Custom Structural Rigid Boxes
Not every project fits neatly into a predefined box style. Rigid construction can also be engineered into custom structures, compartments, tiers and opening experiences developed specifically around the products.
Example: Shrinking × Apple TV
When should
you use a rigid box?
Rigid packaging isn't automatically the right answer for every project.
It makes the most sense when presentation, structure and the opening experience are important parts of the project. A rigid box may be a strong choice when:
- The packaging needs to feel substantial and premium.
- Multiple products need to be presented together.
- Custom compartments or inserts are required.
- The box is intended to be kept rather than immediately discarded.
- The packaging itself is part of a launch, gifting or PR experience.
- Specialty materials, closures or interactive components are being incorporated.
For projects where shipping efficiency, lower unit cost or lightweight construction is the primary objective, another packaging format such as corrugated may make more sense.
Salt & Pepper Gifts helps determine the appropriate structure based on the project rather than automatically recommending the most expensive option.
The products determine the box
One of the most important parts of custom packaging happens before artwork ever goes on the box.
We start with the actual products.
Their dimensions, weight, orientation and relationship to one another determine the size and structure of the packaging.
From there, we develop the internal architecture: where each item sits, what the recipient sees first, how products are removed and how the entire presentation works when the box is opened.
This is why we typically need physical products or accurate production samples before final structural engineering begins.
The exterior and interior are designed as one experience—not as separate decisions.
Custom inserts & interior engineering
A beautiful rigid box doesn't work if the products inside move around, sit awkwardly or feel like they were added after the packaging was designed.
We engineer the interior around the products. The appropriate insert material and construction depends on the products, presentation, budget and shipping requirements.
We do not automatically default to foam when another structural solution makes more sense.
- Custom Trays
- Die-Cut Inserts
- Platforms
- Dividers
- Inverted Compartments
- Hidden Compartments
- Product Wells
- Doors & Panels
- Multi-Level Presentations
Materials, printing & specialty finishes
Once the structure is right, materials and finishes determine how the packaging feels. Depending on the project, custom rigid packaging can incorporate:
- Custom Printed Wraps
- Specialty Papers
- Soft-Touch Finishes
- Foil Stamping
- Spot UV
- Embossing & Debossing
- Textured & Fabric Wraps
- Ribbon Pulls
- Metal Hardware
- Magnetic Closures
- Acrylic Components
- Wood Components
When opening the box is part of the idea
Rigid packaging can become the foundation for much more elaborate experiences.
Depending on the concept, Salt & Pepper Gifts can integrate components such as lighting, audio, video screens, dimensional structures and interactive reveals into custom packaging.
These elements have to be considered during structural development—not simply added at the end.
The electronics, products, inserts and packaging all need to work together as one system.
How much do
custom rigid boxes cost?
There isn't one standard price for a custom rigid box because the structure is only one part of the cost. Pricing is influenced by:
- Quantity
- Finished box size
- Box construction
- Materials
- Printing
- Specialty finishes
- Inserts
- Hardware
- Custom fabrication
- Sampling
- Tooling
- Assembly
- Fulfillment
A straightforward rigid box and a highly engineered PR kit may use the same basic construction method while having completely different production costs.
Salt & Pepper Gifts quotes each project based on the complete scope so the packaging, products and fulfillment requirements can be evaluated together.
How we make custom rigid boxes
-
Project Scope
We start with the products, quantity, budget, timeline, dimensions and creative direction.
-
Structural Design
The box and internal architecture are developed around the actual products and desired opening experience.
-
Sampling
Depending on the project, a prototype or sample can be created to confirm dimensions, construction, fit and product placement.
-
Artwork & Finishes
Once the structure is established, artwork, materials and finishing details are finalized.
-
Production
Following final approvals, the packaging moves into production.
-
Assembly
If Salt & Pepper Gifts is managing the complete project, products and packaging are brought together for kitting and final assembly.
-
Fulfillment
Completed packages can be bulk shipped or individually fulfilled to a provided recipient list.

Rigid box vs. corrugated mailer
Rigid box
Generally provides a more substantial, premium presentation and allows for sophisticated structures, wraps, hardware and opening experiences.
Corrugated mailer
Generally lighter, and can be particularly effective when shipping efficiency, durability and cost are greater priorities.
Neither construction is universally better. The right choice depends on the products, quantity, budget, shipping requirements and desired experience.
Salt & Pepper Gifts works with both and can help determine which construction makes sense for the project.
